ASEM Senior Officials' Meeting in Brussels

On September 10 and 11, 2015, Ambassador Marc Thill participated in Brussels, Belgium, in his capacity as Luxembourg's ASEM Senior Official, in an ASEM Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM), gathering the ASEM SOM Leaders of 53 delegations (51 partner countries, the European Union and the ASEAN Secretariat) and the Executive Director of the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF).

The next SOM will take place in Luxembourg, from November 2 to 4, 2015, on the eve of the 12th ASEM Foreign Ministers' Meeting (FMM 12), on November 5 and 6. Thus the Brussels SOM was focussed on the preparation of the Luxembourg Ministerial, which will launch the 20th anniversary celebrations of ASEM in 2016 and, under the theme "Working together for a sustainable and secure future", will assess the past achievements of ASEM since its founding in Bangkok in 1996 and discuss its future direction for the next decade.

The SOM was preceded, on September 9, by a symposium organized by the think tank "Friends of Europe" on the topic "ASEM at 20 - the challenge of connectivity". Mr. Marc Ungeheuer, Secretary General of the Luxembourg Ministry of foreign and european affairs, was one of the panellist participating in the second session of the symposium: "Connecting people, institutions and ideas - It's a networked world", moderated by Ms Shada Islam, Director of Policy at Friends of Europe.
