Asia-Europe meetings in Luxembourg – November 2-6, 2015
On November 5 and 6, Luxembourg hosted the 12th ASEM Foreign Minister’s Meeting (FMM 12). ASEM was founded in 1996 and is composed of 51 partner countries, plus two institutional partners, namely the ASEAN Secretariat and the European Union. The FMM 12 was chaired by Ms Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign and Security Policy. The last preparatory works were done by the Senior Officials, who met in Luxembourg from November 2 to 4. Ambassador Marc Thill participated in both meetings.
The 12th ASEM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting comes between the ASEM Summit held in Milan in October 2014 and the 11th Summit in Ulan-Bator in July 2016. The FMM 12 was therefore taking stock of the commitments from Milan and paved the way to ASEM’s 20th Anniversary which will be celebrated during the next summit in Mongolia.
Under the theme “Working together for a sustainable and secure future”, the FMM 12 focused on issues of crucial importance to the Asia-Europe partnership and the world at large, namely climate change, disaster management, non-traditional security, connectivity, regional and international issues as well as the future of ASEM.
In addition 3 side-events co-organized by Luxembourg and the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) took place in the side-lines of the ASEM FMM 12: the 1st Young Leaders Summit, the 10th ASEF Journalists Colloquium and the Photo Exhibition “On the Go”.
